You know that wholesome feeling in getting kids involved in growing veggies? That’s what I went for this weekend. There’s a real satisfaction in planting snow peas that they’ll see sprout, climb and eventually be able to eat straight from the vine. Out came the potting mix and it was a mad scramble for buckets of water, spades, dirt, digging and turns in placing seeds in the pots.

Job done in about 5 minutes. Then the kids looked back at me. What I didn’t factor in is that kids have a different satisfaction barometer. Theirs is in the mess, digging and doing – not the waiting and watching. So it was no surprise when, about an hour afterwards, I was offered a banana, pear & grass-clipping ‘lamington’.

Hopefully I can think up a dish as creative as that when we eventually cook the veggies!
