SHOP BLOG – AMELIES ROOM

I met Taylor (the brains and beauty behind Amelies Room) at the second trade show I did in Sydney. Taylor had a stand at the show just over from mine. Selling her amazing handmade quilts, toys and beautiful crochet children’s hats. All the while she had a teeny tinny baby, snuggled in a cosy corner. She was like a Zen mother. Happy, chilled out and I don’t think I heard a peep from the little one the whole 4 days. I must admit I felt very honoured when she choose to stock my range on her website…

amelies room1

How long have you been established? 5 and a half years.

Where did the name of the website come from? Amelie is my daughter’s middle name.

What is the best quirk about the neighbourhood where you’re based? We are online and based in the Royal National Park- my office overlooks an abundance of wildlife. Love the sound of the kookaburras- it is so quiet and peaceful here.

Your areas best kept secret? We are the closest official “country town” to Sydney and our best kept secret is the town itself! Just 50 mins on the train to the CBD and we are amongst horses and wildlife.

Favourite part of your working day? Morning coffee and packing the orders in the early morning sunshine.

What tunes are played in your office? Vampire Weekend, Radiohead, Elbow, Foster the People, Fleet Foxes. Alexander Ebert.

What do you look for when buying for your website? I only buy products that I love and I know my children will love. I read a lot of magazines and am constantly on the internet where I come across a lot of original designers and cute new products.

Where do you buy your coffee from? Make my own soy latte with our espresso machine (worse part of my town is there is absolutely no decent coffee- thankfully my years as a barista (although we didn’t have such a fancy title then!) has taught me a few tricks!

Where do you like to hang when your not in the office? I’m a self confessed homebody but I like to go to Bali as much as I can and most of my free time is spent there! If I’m not in Bali then I’m here in the pool with a good book or making something at the sewing machine. Time out of the house is usually spent exploring new markets, or unwinding with a cocktail at the Bar Next to Samuel’s

Who lives in your family? English Hubby, two kids ages 5 and 2.

What did you want to be when you where a kid? Raised in French Canada with an Australian Grandmother- from about the age of 5 all I ever wanted was to be a fashion designer living in Australia… and here I am.

Amelies Room is open all the time - www.ameliesroom.com.au

Radiohead – Creep

Elbow – One Day Like This

SHOP BLOG – KNUFFLE KID

Here at KK HQ we have been busy collecting mini interviews with our stockists. These wonderful folks share their favourite places for coffee, childhood aspirations and favorite tunes.

Drop into the shops, meet the owner and view their wares. Then pop back here and post your thoughts.

To kick it off, we’ve interviewed Emma (aka Nanny Goat).

SHOP TALK
IMG_1084IMG_1090IMG_1086IMG_1088

How long have you been established? established February 2008.

Where did the name come from? Knuffle is Dutch for cuddle, and I just love kids – humans and goats!

What is the best quirk about the neighbourhood your studio is in? The community – we have such a diverse range of people in our area. My favourite character is a lady with the most amazing 80’s acrylic jumper collection. I see her walk past while I work at my desk. She always gives me a massive wave.

Your areas best kept secret? We have a mini music festival in our backyard once a year (not so secret now).

Favourite part of your working day? Designing the next Knuffle Kid range.

What tunes are played in your studio? PJ Harvey, Jordie Lane, Shannon and the Clams, Texture Like Sun, The Bamboos,  April March and the Makers, Adalita, Cat Power, Velvet Underground, Lanie Lane, Nick Cave, Little Birdie, Wilco, Hunks and his Punks – the list goes on!

What do you look for when buying for your shop? Hard for me to answer this one, but when I buy from shops, I look for quality, uniqueness, and preferably Australian made.

Where do you buy your coffee from? Jelly Bread in West Footscray, Cornershop in Yarraville and Auction Rooms in North Melbourne.

Where do you like to hang when your not in the studio? Wherever my family are… the backyard, park or local cafe. We are about to take our first camping holiday, hopefully that will be something we do more of. We do try and have one day a weekend where we explore another suburb. If I’m by myself I love indulging in the city!

Who lives in your family? Hubby Nick, Ava 6 and Ruby 4.

What did you want to be when you where a kid? I wanted to be a fashion designer and then a National Park Ranger and a photographer. I ended up being a dental nurse, bartender and interior designer. I’ve had a lot of jobs and fate has lead me back to my first option… Fashion.

Emma’s Tunes

PJ Harvey – Hanging in the Wire
Jordie Lane – Not from Around Here
Shannon and The Clams – Take It Back
Texture Like Sun – Bottle
The Bamboos – King of the Rodeo
April March – Chick Habit
Adalita – Perfection
Lanie Lane – Bang Bang

Listen up shopaholics.
The brand new summer range is now in the Knuffle Kid shop. Along with a few sale items.

KIDS V’S FOOD

c dairy

I thought I would share a fantastic kid friendly place that I have just found.

It’s Cowderoy Dairy.

It was an old milk bar, that has been converted into a bustling cafe. The menu caters to everyone in the family, they do great coffee and have the cutest funny face cookies (they taste a lot like tic toc’s – yummo).

The interior echos moments from its milk bar past. Retro tables, ice cream fridges and a great shelving system made from milk crates to display produce.

But the most alluring part about it, is the park within sight line of the deck. The kids played while I got to enjoy a relaxing coffee with Mr Billy Goat.

Perfect!

Do you have a favourite little cafe spot? Feel free to leave a comment on a place that you love.

DIARY OF A PRODUCTION GOAT

devilOK OK. I know I declared that I will do “a blog a day” until the trade show.
This little goat is feeling very sheepish right about now.
This is my excuse people.
I got home late on Sunday after a long day of marketeering and driving to and from Geelong, I was a little tired so I sat on the couch and turned on the TV…. Devil wears Prada was on!
I dont think I need to say anymore, that movie too brilliant to turn off.
The fashion, the location’s and those amazing looks of disgust re: Andy’s outfits (pre makeover of course).
As for yesterday… well no excuse really.
The dog ate my blog teacher!

INSPIRE THE INSPIRED – state of play

shop 1shop 2Let me just say Knuffle Kid will be in good hands in the future, my apprentices have been busy setting up shop all this afternoon.

I think they grabbed most of their clothes from the cupboard and folded them nicely on the table, made a sign and on the cupboard box counter, they have a squirrel shaped bookend that is the scanner.

Maybe they can do my market tomorrow and I can sleep in!

Oh by the way the harassing of my sewers worked, invoices are done and stock will be heading out the door when the shops are ready.

Time for a cup of tea… no stuff it, beer time. I think I deserve it.

DIARY OF A PRODUCTION GOAT

computerWith the trade show under a week away, there is a lot of things to do. The only way to combat the tide of lose ends is a list!
I am a list lady.
Todays list;
- invoicing… still a few to go, but I needed a break and decided to blog instead
- blog… check
- pack invoiced orders… see invoicing
- email and harass sewers for remaining summer production… still no reply
- ring sewers and harass them for remaining summer production… I’ll do that when I’ve finished blogging
- photoshop winter photo’s for secret winter gallery… sorry non-shop people this will be just for retailers, gotta keep some things a surprise
- get stock ready for Piccidilly market… hope you’re all coming
- have a cup tea… check.. maybe I need another one
- type up winter price list and print out… finalising prices might be a good idea also.

Anyway enough blogging I’ve got a goat load of work to get through.
